Initially recorded in 2003 as ‘Untitled,’ Bathymetry is Cities Of Earth’s first proper recording. Using no computers, the music was assembled by CD-bouncing between different recording sources, with material culled from hours of sound collages as well as television & radio treatments. Second-hand synths, samplers and effects hardware provided musical and rhythmic elements. Like its namesake, the album is a thematic exploration of unseen, submerged topographies; murky depths and scattered waves of light below the surface. Although other music was recorded earlier, this album is granted the title of ‘first proper recording,’ as it introduced many of Cities Of Earth’s distinctive early sonic habits and techniques: hazy & psychedelic arrangements, complex sound collage, recursive sampling, found sound, and ‘chewy’ rhythms.
